CONCEPT

GO (pronounced "goh") takes its name from a Japanese sound shared by words meaning five (五), self (吾), mutuality (互), pleasure (娯), and awakening (悟).

GO03 brings the series to Taos, New Mexico, linking five historic sites with the heart of the town. Each site, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, Revolt Gallery, the Millicent Rogers Museum, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, and Ranchos de Taos Plaza, has its own augmented reality sculpture, revealed by scanning a QR code. At Taos Plaza, a central light installation responds to visitors' hand gestures, and all the sculptures appear there together. Visitors choose which sculptures to bring into the light, composing their own mix of physical and virtual light, and take photos with their phones, turning each view into an artwork of their own. Moving between the plaza and the five sites, in either direction, traces an invisible map of Taos. In future editions, CHIKA hopes to link the sites and the plaza through technology, so that what happens in one place can be felt in the others.

GO03 was made during a five-week residency with the Paseo Project, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. CHIKA trained three Native American teenage apprentices from Taos to help build the installation, and taught a Mappathon™ for Kids workshop to middle school students at Taos Day School at Taos Pueblo.
